Letter from Chairman
We are pleased to invite you to our fifth National conference on Medical Informatics and Telemedicine. During the past decade the senior members of this society have witnessed how IT has firmly established its presence in healthcare globally. In India, we are still grappling with how to integrate technology into the larger picture of healthcare. The initial momentum seems to have ebbed, the initiatives are fragmented and often unplanned, causing confusion and a rudderless drift that is totally directionless. One classical example is applying telemedicine to the Indian scenario. In ten years all we have achieved is that it is possible to use this technology if we are given free bandwidth.

In this decade we have also seen emergence of a tech-savvy manpower in healthcare who are fairly knowledgeable and if given an opportunity can deliver what is required. Much of this force from India has used their skills to develop advanced solutions for overseas clients and some of them have tried to give innovative solutions to the Indian healthcare market. But there is element of frustration in this manpower when it comes to implementing projects in India. This is due to mainly poor understanding of ICT’s application in healthcare by senior management or policy makers and the lack of any sort of legislation for implementation of ICT in healthcare. Both are important if we wish to evolve our own standards and give the IT in healthcare in India a business platform.

MCSI will try and address many of these issues during the conference. Using ICT in medical education is a huge opportunity waiting to happen in India. This has been a neglected area and we hope to find ways by which we could inculcate it in our healthcare curriculum.

A repository of free ware and open source software in healthcare with some evaluation would go a long way to start many initiatives and shorten the development time and help to kick start some of the low cost projects. We are looking at experts in this area to help us put a valuable session together.

In the past at MCSI’s conferences we have always tried to give the true Indian perspective and never given importance to the technology hype but have always looked towards the future with excitement. We hope to do the same during the current conference. The conference as in the past will bring together decision makers, policy makers, practicing clinicians, healthcare educators and researchers, health administrators, health technologists and IT vendors The event will feature presentations from experts of national and international repute on various aspects of medical informatics and telemedicine. As always there will be an exhibition of products and technologies.

The registration fee for the conference has again been heavily subsidized to invite wider participation.
