Abstract PACS - Heralding Filmless Imaging Jaspal Singh Abstract PACS is picture archiving and communication system. In simple words, its a system of networked computers that store, display and ensure hospital-wide availability of digitized medical images. The transmission of these images from one location to other falls in the realm of teleradiology. Together, PACS and teleradiology promise to transgress the century old film based medical imaging into filmless era. Diagnosing from a soft image has many advantages, but there are obstacles to overcome. While digital modalities like ultrasound, CT, etc. can be easily tamed, radiography is pushing limits of technology. Economic factors are gradually tilting in favor of filmless world. Human factors and security concerns may delay the advent of completely filmless era but the era of coexistence is already here. The present talk examines the issues and consideration in implementing an economical PACS on a trial basis.
