Abstract |
The provision of healthcare to medically disenfranchised patients due to distance or
circumstances, and those who do not have ready access to healthcare resulted in a new
technology in medicine called as TELEMEDICINE [1] – incorporating
telecommunication and information technologies to clinicians to reach patients remotely.
Telemedicine is producing a great impact in the monitoring of patients located in remote
nonclinical environments such as homes, elder communities, gymnasiums, schools,
remote military bases, ships. A number of applications, ranging from data acquisition to
chronic patient surveillance, and even to the control of therapeutic procedures, are being
implemented in many parts of the world. The greatest advantages of telemedicine are
increased access to health care, reduced costs and quality improvement. As part of this
growing trend, This paper is focused towards remote patient monitoring through the
Internet & other types of networks like Metropolitan Area Network (MAN),
Wide Area Network (WAN). The Internet has become increasingly popular and
successful because it uses standard communication protocols and hypertext markup
language (HTML), and is supported by multiple platforms. Innovations such as server
push, secure socket layer (SSL) and Java made it possible to use the web for creating
intelligent monitoring systems for dynamic processes [2]. This paper focus towards the
data acquisition of electrocardiogram, which is one of the most widespread medical investigations.
