| Abstract |
Introduction
Sir William Osler once said, "Listen to the patient, he's telling you the diagnosis."
Above message emphasizes that how important is for the young doctors to appreciate the methodology of clinical practice with primary focus towards patient and his concerns. Pressures of modern medicine give very little amount of time to physicians to document a comprehensive medical history of the illness. EMR have emerged as one of the major areas to improve the quality of health care delivery by improving the documentation in health care delivery. An EMR system streamlines patient management, provide instant access to data, improve billings, decrease professional liability and ascertain regulatory compliance.
Material & Methods
This paper/ presentation focuses on what is an EMR/ EHR, migration path from paper to electronic data and achieving an optimum balance, essential attributes and advantages of EMR, various levels of EHR, challenges of EMR, types of EMR solutions, etc.
In spite of the fact that the information technology infrastructure that is required to put an electronic medical records system exists, implementing the appropriate business process and architecture can be very complex.
Conclusion
A well-designed and formulated implementation process methodology needs to be put in place to leverage integration benefits of EMR system. EMR are one of most exciting IT application solution in healthcare that needs a technological upgrade. Apart from financial incentives, other significant gains would be improvement in quality of health care delivery and long-term medical research and improving clinician-patient relationship. Traditionally healthcare industry has been a slow adopter of information technology. Legacy systems and paper-based management has been failing health care delivery processes. We are excited by the tremendous possibilities and value this system brings but are also thoughtful about by the economic realities of the industry.
