Abstract |
Introduction:
Telemedicine is the practice of medicine over distance with the use of Tele-communication Equipment and Information Technology. Telemedicine electronically transports the highest levels of medical care into the most remote areas.
Objective:
Telemedicine brings a Specialist located hundreds of miles away into the actual examination room via a live interactive system. Persons who live hours from advanced medical care, or even from basic medical services, can directly access high quality medical expertise without leaving their community. Health departments, hospitals, correctional facilities, residential care centers, nursing homes and other health care providers can join the telemedicine network.
Methodology:
Store and forward: used for non-emergency situations, when a diagnosis or consultation may be made subsequently.
Two-way interactive system: used when a ‘face-to-face’ consultation is necessary. This allows for medical tests to be conducted under the supervision of the specialist.
Components involved for connecting primary health centers and expert centers are:
Videoconferencing (Video & Audio).
Electronic Patient Records.
Medical Imaging (DICOM compliance Images).
Medical Equipment Connectivity.
Expert Consultation
Depending on the medical equipment, the following information in form of
Record or in Streaming Mode can be linked up from …
Radiology (X-rays, Ultrasound, CT-Scan, MRI, Mammography, Nuclear
Scans, etc.) / Pathology / ECG/EKG, Echo / Coronary Angiography
Conclusion:
In India, Telemedicine assumes a very significant role because of the fact that the medical infrastructure for secondary and tertiary care is poor and people in rural and even semi urban areas have no access to quality healthcare. Telemedicine is a cost effective method of taking tertiary care and to a certain extent secondary care to the remote areas of our country.
