Abstract Introduction: Understanding the Indian Healthcare Industry The Indian healthcare sector has its own peculiarities. It is not only vast but is also very diverse in nature. From an information perspective, two of the most pertinent challenges are the presence of disparate healthcare delivery mechanisms and the prevalence of paper based transactions across the healthcare spectrum. The Indian Healthcare Delivery System works in isolation from one another in terms of providing continuum of care to the patients. There is an urgent need for using Technology to build in efficiencies in healthcare delivery. The first steps are being adopted by hospitals through implementation of hospital information system (HIS). Going ahead, we foresee a need for a networked healthcare delivery environment that looks beyond the four walls of a hospital and brings in other stakeholders as well. OBJECTIVE The objective is to build in a scenario for providing end-to-end technology solutions that ensures fulfillment of key business drivers influencing technology needs for healthcare. Technology solutions should provide the option for Strategic Information Collaboration through Seamless Healthcare Delivery. While defining the role of technology solutions, it is also essential that we take care of cost, level of service and the scalability of the solution to include multiple stakeholders. METHODOLOGY An HIS supports and manages the processes and operations within the four walls of a hospital. It is usually the first major step to technology up gradation that a healthcare provider undertakes. The functionality of HIS is two-fold: Supporting the operations of healthcare providers (hospitals) and facilitating capture & transfer of valuable MIS data. Need for HIS … Intricacies in Healthcare service Billings Administrative constraints by Hospital Management Requirement of Patients’ Clinical Information by different Clinical Service Providers Pilferages and overstocking of Drugs etc… Return on Investment on HIS Implementation Management’s benefits like Cost reduction, Efficiency enhancement … Administrator’s benefits in getting Real-time information Hospital’s Resources … Doctors’ benefits like access to updated Patients’ Clinical Medical Record online … Patient’s benefits like speedy bills payment, speedy services delivery, … Looking Beyond HIS - Integration of HIS on a common platform For the Hospital to reach-out to the other Service Providers in the network like Super Specialty Centers, Diagnostic centers, Clinics, Pharma etc., Telemedicine, WEI, CRM solutions are deployed and is integrated to HIS. The need to deploy these end-to-end IT solutions stems from a clarity of vision and a roadmap that the healthcare sector defines for itself. And the starting point is really NOW! Experiences of Apollo with Technology solutions  Role of Apollo Health Street – The Technology Arm  Status of Technology deployment (HIS and beyond)  Technology – Used as a strategic tool. CONCLUSION Information Technology has become an indispensable tool for Efficiency improvement in the Healthcare Industry. Today, thanks to the increasing availability of hardware, good communication bandwidths etc. and that too at a reasonable cost, the healthcare industry has started actively looking at Technology solutions to enhance their performance. While this is a step in the right direction, organizations must simultaneously start working towards an End-to-End IT solution that integrates it well with the entire healthcare industry.
