Abstract 'Forgive them father, they knowest not what they do' these words may best be used to sum up the state of affairs when it comes to defining the practice of determination of user requirements in any health infomatics project undertaken in India. The software vendor is keen to prove his expertise in systems design and development. The healthcare client is even more keen to demand the latest in process automation. In this eagerness to do a good job, the casualty is none other than the most sought after bride by both parties i.e the satisfaction of user requirements by providing accurate, reliable, robust and efficient systems. User requirements, the central concept which drives the development of systems cannot be brushed aside lightly, Before even venturing into an IT project, all steps must be taken to ensure that the objectives to be met by the system to be sponsored are well understood by the client and the vendor. The domain expertise of the client and the technology expertise of the solution provider will be able to deliver the baby only by a careful partnership in which both parties share the same vision. A problem well understood, is half solved & this should be the guiding principle for all health ware However in practice user requirements elicitation is given scant attention by IT as well as health professionals alike and therefore most systems are ready for scraping as soon as they are implemented.
