Abstract:
Ethnography is a qualitative research method originally used by anthropologists. It literally means the study and description of human cultures. It provides a descriptive report, utilising a range of approaches, mainly informal interviews and observational techniques.
Scaled down version of ethnography, ‘Mini-ethnography’ or ‘Applied ethnography’ was adapted for new products development.
Ethnography provides a holistic view of the domain with emphasis on the context and helps in understanding the work settings. It reveals actual work practices rather than documented procedures and can reveal undocumented requirements. Observing the users in real work situations also helps in developing the user interface.
The limitations of ethnography are that it is subjective and relies on inference by the ethnographer, it describes only current work practices and trained investigators are required to undertake the study.
Despite the limitations, ethnography has been recommended by experts as a first step in order to identify issues and work practices in an unfamiliar domain.
IT majors like Microsoft and Intel already have special research groups that use ethnographic techniques. Healthcare systems are unstructured and complex systems and the failure rate is worrying. Many healthcare systems developers are finding ethnographic techniques useful for system development and ensuring system use.
