Abstract |
Standards In Healthware - Their Relevance In The Indian Context
There are many International-standardizing bodies dedicated to bringing about uniformity of implementation of healthcare processes practiced in the healthcare organizations in the West. Given the nature of emphasis on quality of service, protection of human rights, privacy protection drives in developed countries like the USA, UK etc., some of the standards are mandatory as they seek to protect the rights of the Citizen and bring about transparency of practices in professional healthcare.
Standards are mainly implemented for achieving the objective of plug and play operational protocols seeking to free the organization of individual control monopolies they streamline operational processes across players in the same domain resulting in optimized administration and interaction of corporate healthcare organizations.
In an Indian context though, implementation of standards have to be undertaken cautiously as they involve a huge cost in terms of human resources, consultancy fees, IT usage etc. which in the final analysis have to be borne by the lay patient on the street. The resources used to implement standards would be better invested in up gradation of equipment, services and education in a country like India where these resources are at a premium.
