Abstract |
Today's healthcare environment is in the midst of unprecedented change. A widespread call for the improvement of patient care is compelling healthcare providers to implement newer technologies, including Healthcare Informatics that enhance the quality of their services.
The focal point of enhancing the quality of healthcare delivery is the maintenance of a comprehensive Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The EMR should also have information related to associated administrative and support facilities. An Electronic Medical Record that supports Data, Text, Images and Voice provides the Clinician and other healthcare providers with a comprehensive tool that aids in enhancing the quality of healthcare delivery. This EMR is a lifetime data repository built over a period of time with data from multiple healthcare institutions within the Enterprise.
The advent of open systems and standards has created a multitude of opportunities. Technology advancements have ushered in facilities to integrate software and medical equipment, thereby offering an optimum man-machine interface. With such technology, healthcare informatics today is capable of delivering a near “paperless and filmless” environment.
The question being raised today is whether the concept of a “Paperless and Filmless” environment is a myth or reality. This presentation addresses the question from a practical point of view. It covers the technology building blocks for creating a “paperless and filmless” environment. But technology is just one cornerstone of a successful solution – humanware, legislation and costs being the others. What are the issues related to these associated cornerstones that impact the creation of this environment?
This Conference paper examines the concepts, issues and components of such a system and presents a holistic picture of this new era in healthcare informatics – “Paperless and Filmless” environment. The paper is based on experience in implementation of such a hospital environment in the international market.
