ASIA HEART FOUNDATION
INTEGRATED TELEMEDICINE and TELEHEALTH PROJECT
(ITTP)
“TELEMEDICINE IS NOT AN EVOLUTIONARY CONCEPT BUT A REVOLUTIONARY CONCEPT
AND AT THE HEART OF EVERY REVOLUTION IS THE NEED FOR SUDDEN MASSIVE CHANGE,
THE CORE OF WHICH IS THE HUMAN MIND”
The “synergism” that is derived at by integrating advancements made in information and communications technology with health care, so that people could have better health care is what has been achieved through this unique Telemedicine project. This integrated fusion facilitated treatment of (cardiac) emergency cases, real time resulting in valuable lives saved and a permanent “PARADIGM SHIFT” for the policy makers, community, doctors and the patients not to mention the huge resource savings.
This new paradigm of health care delivery is conveniently termed “ TELEMEDICINE” meaning healthcare practice at a distance. In most cases world wide, telemedicine & telehealth is just off-the-shelf applications of communications technology directly into the health care delivery system. The escalating health care cost and the challenge of taking modern medicare to all rural and remote areas was possible only with this type of an “electronic revolution in health care”. Telemedicine facility in Siliguri, Bankura, Udaipur in Tripura, Tinsukia in Assam, Chamarajanagar,Sargur, Hulkoti,Mangalore,Kundapur, etc is not only helping save depleting public spending on ever increasing health care needs but is saving precious lives that are directly linked to the sensitive Human Development Index (HDI), helping thus to elevate the same within the state of West Bengal, Karnataka and the North Eastern Region. A fair quantum of equity in health care is thus being achieved through this Integrated Telemedicine and Telehealth Project without incurring exorbitant cost. The project has, as its strong supporters, various state governments and the Indian Space Research Organization. The ITTP project is therefore one, which also illustrates pioneering Govt. leadership in a “Public Private Partnership Synergism”. Till date more than 3490 patients have been benefited from online specialty consultation and more than 674 patients have been given lifesaving treatment over the past 11 months with 92 % success and 95 % patient satisfaction index. Linear quantification of cost savings has been approximated at 81%. Mortality index averages at 8.1%. over the past eleven months.
Asia Heart Foundation and Narayana Hrudayalaya have been fortunate to be involved with this active telemedicine program, exploring better ways of providing quality medical care to hitherto deprived population living in remote and rural areas. We have had the opportunity to make lots of mistakes, to compare notes with other practitioners around the country and the world, to enjoy some modest successes. Telemedicine projects/practice involves major issues centering around organization, staffing, and administration, which are very difficult to characterize not to emphasize the nitty gritty of integrating multiple domain areas covering health professionals, information technology, technology vendors, system maintenance, hospital and clinic administration, professional education, public awareness, politics, funding, etc.
The first International Telemedicine network is recently dedicated to the deprived population in Malaysia where and NGO( GOPIO, Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin) is our strategic partner.
