Abstract |
The Sankara Nethralaya Hospital Information Management System
Background
Sankara Nethralaya, is an ophthalmic hospital at Chennai, India, which caters to the patients from near and far. On an average we see around 1200 patients and perform approximately 150 surgeries a day at its four different locations in Chennai. It is a non-profit institution and is the first eye hospital in Asia to be awarded ISO certification.
Purpose
Though computerization was implemented early in the past, a comprehensive Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) was required, which will have equal thrust for administrative and management perspective, to employ leading edge technologies, that will improve the quality of health care, increase the efficiency of health care delivery system and provide accurate and timely information to health care managers.
Methods
Following a review of existing HIMS products and an evaluation of source code availability, data conversion, implementation and training, it was felt that an in-house development of an HIMS would be suited.
Results
The HIMS at SN has the following modules
Out Patient Appointment & Surgery Fixing; Bed Management;
Registration - Out Patient & In Patient;
Billing -Out Patient; In Patient; Corporate;
Medical Records; DBR; Post Op Notes; Discharge Summary;
Drug Counter; Stores; Gate Pass System; Commercial; Optical Shop;
Human Resources Department; Time Office; Donation;
Message Center & Correspondence; File & letter Tracking;
Central Address Database & Personal Identification;
Eye Bank; Library; Fixed Assets; Equipment Maintenance;
Payroll and financial accounting have more statuary requirements and therefore an already available package was used.
Conclusion
The HIMS allows the physician improved efficiency by providing him information that will help in research and analysis.
For the administrative staff the HIMS maintains and integrates information of hospital, hospital staff and patients. It allows planning and acquiring of resources, optimum resource utilizations and improved quality of services.
The information system to assist the Management to analyze the growth and profitability; Monitor return of investment on medical & auxiliary facilities; Maintain & Monitor the Quality of medical services;
All the above benefits finally impact positively on the quality and efficiency of patient care resulting in enhanced patient satisfaction. |
