Abstract |
The electromyogram(EMG) from the gastrocnemius and the tibialis anterior muscles were measured for thirty five healthy subjects during normal level walking. The DC offset in these raw surface EMGs were eliminated. The power spectrum of the EMG was calculated and the mean power value (MPV) determined for each gait cycle. The variation of the parameter with speed and fatigue was studied. The results indicate that these parameters were repeatable measures for a specific muscle and they did not vary with speed or fatigue for the two muscles studies. Data were also collected from one clinical subject suffering form a gait pathology with the same experimental protocol. The MPV was able to establish a significant difference between the clinical subject and the normal population at a significant level of 0.05. however, further studies must be conducted for defining such a normal index for other skeletal muscles observed during gait and for the classification of “normals” and “Clinical” Subjects in the study of muscle contribution during gait and other activities. |
